The Cycos consist of seven boys aged from 11-16 years old.
The Committee is guided by Margaret Strong (Youth Development Officer from the Tweed Shire Council) and supported by parents and members of the Chillingham Community.
Since their first meeting these boys have achieved success in many of their endeavours.
The boys have formed an African Drumming Band, The Hot Chilli Drummers and are instructed bi-weekly by Fi Sproule (pictured) and Sel Leivesley.
The Hot Chilli Drummers have performed at various venues since their beginnings, including Harmony Day in Murwillumbah and the opening of Youth Week in Murwillumbah (see Gallery for photos). The boys were invited to perform at the recent Tugun Bypass Opening but unfortunately the entertainment was cancelled due to inclement weather.
The CYCOs have organised two Youth Events held at the Chillingham Community Centre. The Chillingham Chillout festivals have been well attended and the boys have raised money to contribute towards further youth activities in the area. There is always 100% attendance at their committee meetings which is an exceptional effort for a group of boys in their age group.
The CYCOs are always willing to volunteer their time and help out where they can. Following flooding in Chillingham in January 2008, the boys made themselves available to clean up the local preschool, tennis courts and assist local residents. They volunteered for a community fundraiser to help the badly damaged preschool, with one of the boys (Nick) baking over 100 chocolate chip cookies to sell on the day.
(Heavenly Handmade Biscuits has earmarked Nick for employment when he has finished school!)
The Chillingham Youth Committee have made a film documentary about themselves, their hobbies and their community. This film can be viewed at the following link:

This film was originally made to apply for a youth grant. More than anything these boys would like a safe skating area in the village as they are currently using the footpath. We are working hard applying for grants to get enough money to hopefully secure a concrete slab and a shed at the Community Centre for these boys. They have a few pieces of relocatable skate furniture that have been built and donated by community members. All they need is a safe space to use these items. We are looking at about $25,000.
These boys deserve these facilities! They work hard and contribute to their community in a positive way. We are always looking for donations or contributions, so check out the film and the following news clips and if you think you can help them in any way, please fill out the form on the contact us page and we will get back to you as soon as possible.
Thank you.
